Third Time

Third Time is a 1999 chestnut OTTB. He is 17.1 hands and about 1200 pounds. Third Time won one and placed in several races. He was used as a pony horse and was bought be be Deb’s next horse, but she will be looking for a shorter horse. You can see his pedigree here and his race record here.

We don’t know a lot about Third Times past, besides that he was a pony horse after he raced. In his little over three years on the ranch he has enjoyed being a pasture ornament. He has been shown the trails and seemed to take it all as he does everything in stride. He is a great riding horse. Deb has actually ridden him in the yard and he was great. It’s just a very long way up and down.

Third Time knows all the standard race horse things: Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch. He is current on his shots and worming. Third Time is not a very beginner’s horse, but is very willing. He does know speed, but has to be asked to show it. He is a cribber.

Third Time was sold on July 4th to two wonderful teenagers that will spoil him loads. Contact us to make an appointment to see one of our other horses.

Dr. Hawkeye

Dr. Hawkeye is a 1999 dark bay thoroughbred gelding. He is about 16.2 hands and about 1100 pounds. Dr. Hawkeye is an Iowa bred, born on April 26, 1999 by Parfaitement – Denali’s Year, by Colonel Herring. You can see his pedigree here.

He had 16 starts on the track with no wins. You can see his results by clicking here. He is a great long distance horse. Unfortunately, while in training May 2005 he kicked something and injured his back sesamoid. He is healed and is transitioned well to a riding horse.

Hawk was never tired in any distance when he raced; he just didn’t have the greatest speed for a race horse. He never broke his maiden. We have had his leg x rayed and he is sound. He will be good for trail, low jumps, and English pleasure. He loves to trail ride and will take you up the steepest mountain and back down with the greatest of ease.

Dr. Hawkeye was trained to trail ride by his own doctor. Michelle Brotherton owned and rode Dr. Hawkeye on the trails for several years. She decided she wanted a more challenging horse and moved up to Charming Starr. Hawk and Michelle were a great match while she was learning to ride a ex-race horse and Hawk was learning the trails.

Hawk does all the standard race horse things. He loads, stands for the shoer, and the vet. He is ready to finish into the horse you want. Hawk is available for sale, lessons, trail riding, and lease. Owning VS Leasing

I read this article today and it provides a great case for leasing a horse for that first time rider no matter what age. It has a link to a Horse Cost Calculator that even makes more points to leasing a horse until you are certain. And of course also links to folks with lots of money that have kids riding horses in some very top notch places.

At Sierra Ranch, LLC we provide you with the horse owning experience without the responsibility until you are certain you are ready for that responsibility. We have seen several times a horse crazy teenager fall hard for her perfect horse, and then go off to college and not have time or money to keep the horses.

We provide our leasees with everything needed to learn about horses, gain experience so that you get the right horse, and without the up front cost involved with purchasing everything needed for the horse. We provide this for the cost of boarding a horse. Just $300 per month gets you full access to your equine experience.

The lease included for both rider and horse:

A saddle that fits both rider and horse.
A helmet for every ride and a vet when jumping for the rider.
Regular veterinary care and farrier work for the horse.
All vaccinations, worming and other veterinary care is included.
The horse can be changed at the request of the rider without a penalty.
The rider can progress and move to a more challenging horse that fits the rider’s skills.
The rider and horse have access to transportation to events, trails, etc.
All this at the same price as boarding a horse.

Leasing is a great option to learn more about the horse and see if you are the right match. It is different than a lesson horse in that you are the only person riding the horse.

Here at Sierra Ranch, LLC we prepare folks to begin horse ownership. We know many folks that have never owned a horse , let a lone an ex racing thoroughbred. These wonderful horses require some special care, just as they require a particular rider. We strive not only to make good matches, but responsible owners. Karama Trapp

Karama Trapp is one interesting horse. We bought him after Rick pushed me to go look at him in his stall at Remington Park in OKC. I had told Rick I was NOT buying another horse, but just one look and he was ours.

Karama raced for us a few races. You can see his race record here. You can see his pedigree here. He was foaled March 1, 1999, and is out of Trapp Mountain – Karama Tales, by Castle Guard. He is the most Arabian looking thoroughbred we have. Click here to see a Winner’s Photo.

He found a perfect match. She came out and rode the crazy horse when he had not been home from the track a week. She had her trainer out and rode him. Then her family came out and he was sold. Karama didn’t like being in the barn in town and returned to the ranch. His rider came out and rode on occasion. Then we got the call they wanted to sell him, so we bought him back.

Karama is definitely a been there done that kinda horse. He seemed to be an old soul even when we first purchased him. He can do shows, ride trails, jump, and be a perfect gentleman. He is currently one of the horses available for lease at Sierra Ranch, LLC. He loves not being kept in a barn. He is great on trail rides. He does have some issues. He loves to crib and this is why life in a barn is not the life for him. Living in on the ranch he only cribs when in a stall usually eating.

HORSE THAT OVERCAME ADVERSITY ATTEMPTS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

Lukas, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who stands 16.2 hands, may well be the smartest horse in the country–maybe the world, and owner-trainer Karen Murdock is trying to get him into the Guinness World Records for “Most numbers identified by a horse in one minute.” On June 16, Lukas was able to identify a correct number at least 18 times. STUDY EXPLORES HOW HORSES VIEW THE WORLD

GULF OIL SPILL CALLED NO IMMEDIATE THREAT TO HORSES

The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico poses no immediate threat to horses residing in Gulf states, according to one Louisiana official. The massive oil leak began last month when a deep water British Petroleum water oil rig off the Louisiana coast exploded pumping millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Join us in Riding to Save Babies!

Saddle up and make plans to attend the sixth annual “Ride to Save Babies” Trail Ride. For a minimum pre-registry donation of $20, riders can ride the trails then come back for some great food. All to help save babies and benefit the March of Dimes. Check out their website here!

On Saturday, April 17th, 2010, at Lake Carl Blackwell, horse lovers can enjoy a one-day outing, along with prizes and great food! All money is given to help the lifesaving programs of the March of Dimes. Individual prizes will be given for the adult and youth that raises the most money, along with all participants being registered for prize drawings. Registration is $20 and will include the entry fee, food, and a t-shirt. Late registration begins at 10am- 12noon, the ride will begin at 1pm from the equestrian campgrounds of Lake Carl Blackwell, located just 8 miles west of Stillwater on Highway 51. Riders will return for food, drinks and entertainment around 6pm at the campgrounds.

The “Ride to Save Babies” is a fundraiser for the March of Dimes, an organization which helps to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality. You can help to save babies from these threats to their health just by saddling up and joining this benefit ride.

Importance of a Tribe…

Some friends of mine have started a new site, Girly Gazatte. The site is about how women need to have positive relationships with other women, mostly. They have lots of cool articles about motherhood, fashion and many other things that make you think.

In their kick off week they posted an article about who is in your tribe. (The blog has since been taken down.)

I had left a comment about who I thought was in my tribe. I have a group of ladies that I have devoted a great deal of my time to in the past and I thought they would always be there for me. However, last weekend I had something happen that makes me question that.

I realize that relationships take some nurturing and work. However, I guess I may have not nurtured that relationship as much as I should have in the last year. Our family inherited a business and as any of you know that own a business the first year is often the most trying. So I have not been around for my friends as much as I used to be. Now understand that I had spent 7 years as the leader and resigned a couple of years ago to help raise my step kids. Our family was still quite involved with the group.

Our family helped with a couple of functions a year providing entertainment. Last year they came to me and said they would like to try something different at one function, and I understood. It was business and they needed to be able to pull a crowd. My hubby didn’t understand and took it kinda personal. I discussed this with the group. I chalked this up to male egoism.

Then last week we offered to provide entertainment for the function we did last year and possibly the other one. I sent an email explaining the issue that that we would be giving up a gig at the new business to do these functions. I got no response. Then later in the week got a group email stating that someone else was hired.

I felt confused. On one hand I understand it’s business. On the other hand just one email would have made me feel that they understood and show me the path they wanted to take. I don’t expect to get every gig. I don’t expect much. An email letting me know they received mine and wanted to do something different would have been the nice thing.

Needless to say this really makes me question who is in my tribe? Who has my back? Who will be there when I need something or someone? How much does a tribe need to be nurtured? Do tribes change as you move to different places in your life? Do you need a sub-tribe for work friends, mom friends, fun friends, etc.?

I have never been one to have tons of friends, kinda is part of being a nerdy engineering kinda gal. Most of my tribe growing up and through school were guys. So dealing with a group of ladies has always been interesting, but kinda thought I had made headway. Gives me some new perspective.
